Why Is Testing Important?

Most drink spiking is unreported by victims because it's often difficult to know soon enough.

Drugs commonly used to incapacitate are detectable by a urine/blood test for a short time, so a positive result means immediate testing by a certified professional is required to prove anything beyond suspicion. Hair follicle tests can report some drugs for longer.

Rohypnol "roofie" Testing

On a chemical level, Rohypnol (flunitrazepam) is very similar to drugs like Xanax and Valium. All are benzodiazepine drugs. Luckily, the manufacturer adds a green/blue dye to the product making it visually detectable, but not in dark colored drinks.

Beverages can be tested using a lateral flow test that involves a dropper, diluting process through a cassette, then a 5-minute wait.

Drink protector covers are suggested as a way to block all unwanted substances when detection is not viable.

Rohypnol can be detected in the bloodstream for 24 hours and urine up to 5 days. Hair follicle tests may report up to 30 days.

Drink Testing Best Practices

When should a drink be tested? First, if you are concerned, evaluate if the situation is too risky to consume alcohol. If possible, select a beverage that is not pre-opened.

Testing as a prevention tactic could be justified for all mixed drinks made by an unknown person, especially if crafted out of view. This may not be sustainable, so perhaps consider where you are, if you are alone (more vulnerable), or the context, like meeting someone for the first time.

Drink spiking is also accomplished with other illegal drugs, prescription sleep aids, or just higher alcohol concoctions.

Test Strip Best Practices

Do not dip a test strip into drink.

Drop liquid on test areas using a straw.

Some Red substances (Bloody Mary mix) can cause false positives.

Milk based drinks can cause false positives.
