What Are Drink Test Strips?

Drink test strips are made of plastic or paper with areas that turn color when enough concentration of a drug is present in a beverage. When a small drop of liquid is applied to the strip, a color indicator reacts if certain compounds are present.

These strips are commonly used to detect drugs such as:

  • GHB (gamma-hydroxybutyrate)
  • Ketamine
  • Scopolamine
  • Cocaine
  • Other “amine” based drugs.

Because they require only a small sample of the beverage, drink test strips can be used quickly and discreetly.

How Drink Spiking Test Strips Work

  1. A drop of the beverage is placed on the testing areas.
  2. A visible color change indicates whether a substance may be present.

The process typically takes only a few seconds and does not require any special equipment.

Who Uses Drink Spike Test Strips?

Drink spike detection products are commonly used by:

  • Bar and nightclub patrons
  • College students
  • Festival and concert attendees
  • Hospitality staff
  • Event organizers

These tools are designed to help people feel more confident about the safety of their drinks when attending social events.

Common Types of Drink Spiking Substances

Substances commonly associated with drink spiking include:

GHB

GHB is a central nervous system depressant that can be difficult to detect without testing.

Ketamine

Ketamine is used recreationally with effects similar to ecstasy but causes memory loss.

Scopolamine

Scopolamine or “devils breath” is sold across South America and easily imported by tourists.

Cocaine

Cocaine is often combined with other drugs as a “cocktail” of different substances.

Why Carry Drink Drug Test Strips?

Most drink spiking is unreported by victims because it's often difficult to know soon enough.

Drugs commonly used to incapacitate are detectable by a urine/blood test for a short time, so a positive result means immediate testing by a certified professional is required to prove anything beyond suspicion. Hair follicle tests can report some drugs for longer.
